Vibrator Materials

If you’ve ever seen a sex toy, you know that they can come in a variety of materials. The textures can range from soft and stretchy, like human flesh, or hard and shiny, like glass.

When it comes to vibrators, the list of materials is just as long as any other sex toy . . . and it’s growing. We’ll begin with a material that is rather new to the vibrator world.

  • Glass Vibrators – When you think of a vibrator, you’re probably thinking flexible. Even if you’re not thinking flexible, the last hard material you’re probably thinking of is glass. Well, there aren’t too many glass vibrators, but pioneer glass sex toy company Phallix Glass has designed the first glass vibrator. It’s smooth and cylindrical in shape, with a vibrating bullet in the middle. The good thing about a glass vibrator is that the material is not porous, so cleaning it is no hassle. Wipe it down with antibacterial soap and water or a sex toy cleaner after play and you’re all done.
  • Silicone Vibrators – Silicone vibrators are made from a high-grade rubber that is very durable. The material holds body heat well and is an excellent conductor of vibrations. Theses vibrators are a little pricey, but worth it. The only con is that silicone vibrators and silicone-based lubricant don’t work well together. Avoid using them together, or else the material of your vibrator will dissolve.
  • Cyberskin™ Vibrators – Praised as one of the best materials for a vibrator, this soft and stretchy material with the look and feel of human skin is used on realistic vibrators. Cyberskin™ vibrators give a more realistic look. It’s also known as Ultraskin, Eroskin, Softskin, Cyber Jel-lee, Futurotic and UR3. After use, wash your realistic vibrators with a special sex toy cleaner for Cyberskin toys or a very mild soap and water mixture. After wash, these vibrators require touch-ups with talc because the material becomes sticky. They are more delicate than other vibrator materials and porous, so your best bet is to use with a condom.
  • Jelly Vibrators - These dildos are often inexpensive. Most are made from PVC (polyvinylchloride), a widely used plastic treated with plasticizers called phthalates to make it soft and flexible. The inside of the vibrator is made with slightly softer PVC filler for maximum flexibility. Jelly vibrators are very porous. Cleaning with soap and water is the best choice, and for better protection use a condom.
  • Metal Vibrators – Metal vibrators are usually chrome or steel-plated and are very slick and smooth feeling. These vibrators are usually on for external play and are made in very simple cylindrical shapes. Like glass vibrators, the metal vibrators are completely non-porous, so you won’t have to worry about a tedious clean-up process. Just wipe clean and store.
  • Electronic Vibrators – These vibrators, commonly known as body massagers, are usually made of hard plastic, like a back massager or regular household appliance. These vibrators are not intended for internal use, so cleanup is a snap. Some electronic vibrators, like the Hitachi™ Magic Wand, have a removable foam head that can be thrown in the washing machine; but as for the rest of the toy, just use a damp cloth and wipe any residue clean.
And there you have it; a list of the materials that vibrators are made from. Now that you know the pros and cons of having a soft or hard-textured, realistic or stylish vibrator, get ready to choose the perfect one for you.
